Therese Martin was born at Alencon in France in 1873. While still young she entered the Carmel of Lisieux, where she lived in the greatest humility, evangelical simplicity and confidence in God. By her words and example she taught the novices these same virtues. Offering her life for the salvation of souls and the spread of the Church. She died on 30th September, 1897, was canonised in 1925 and declared a Doctor of the Church on Mission Sunday, 19th October, 1997.  Let us follow her little way to Jesus throughout this Novena begging her intercession as she did promise us:

"I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth."

First Day: Humility

“I am too little for great things.” - St Therese

Just as the Saint, whom all the world knows as The Little Flower, recognised that her approach to God must be based upon humility, so must we likewise recognise that God will only hear the humble.  Therefore acknowledging our weakness, let us nevertheless ask with confidence.  Little things done well for the love of God make up the life which is truly great.

“To him that is little, mercy is granted.”  It is possible to remain little even in the most responsible position, and is it not written that at the last day, “The Lord will arise to save the weak and lowly ones of the earth.”  He does not say ‘to judge’, but ‘to save.’

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be….

V. St Therese of the Child Jesus, pray for us.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray

O God, Who has so often chosen the weak things of this world to confound the strong, we implore You that through the glorious intercession of St Therese, You will hear and answer us in our need.  Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

St Therese of the Child Jesus, hear our prayers and obtain for us all we ask.

Second Day: Gratitude

Jesus does not ask for great things, but only for gratitude and self-surrender. – St Therese

To God we owe everything, even those things which we receive from others.  If, therefore, nature prompts us to gratitude to our neighbour, who by comparison has given us little, how much greater must be our gratitude to God?  In return He asks our love.  Let us then turn to Him in complete surrender, begging Him to continue to shower down His blessings upon us.  “Amongst the disciples of the world, He meets with nothing but indifference and ingratitude, and alas! Among His own, how few hearts surrender themselves without reserve to the infinite tenderness of His Love.”

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be….

V. St Therese of the Child Jesus, pray for us.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray

Grant, O God, that we may be ever grateful for all Your gifts.  We implore You to bestow upon us through the prayers of St Therese, the further treasures of Your Divine Favours and Blessings, through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

St Therese of the Child Jesus, hear our prayers and obtain for us all we ask.
