In the six months following the January 12 earthquake that killed more than 220,000 Haitians, the Church’s relief efforts have aided 2.3 million people at the cost of $46.8 million, according to a report coauthored by Honduran Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, president of Caritas Internationalis, and Bishop Pierre-André Dumas of Anse-à-Veau et Miragoane, president of Caritas Haiti.

“Up to 1.5 million people received food aid, and close to 400,000 people benefited from Caritas healthcare programs following the disaster,” a Caritas press release notes. However, “over one million people still live in makeshift settlements and camps around the capital Port-au-Prince, and providing them with better accommodation ahead of the imminent rainy season is essential.”
