Saint Henry De Osso y Cervello Priest
OCD: Optional Memory
Henry was born at Vinebre, Catalonia, Spain, on the 6th October, 1840 and was ordained priest on 21st September, 1867. He was an apostle to young people in teaching them about their faith and he inspired various movements for the teaching of the Gospel. As a spiritual director he was fascinated by St Teresa of Jesus, the great teacher in the ways of prayer and Daughter of the Church who is better known in the English-speaking world as St Teresa of Avila. In the light of her teaching, he founded the Company of St Teresa (1876) dedicated to educating women in the school of the Gospel and following the example of St Teresa. He gave himself to preaching and the apostolate through the printing press. He underwent many severe trials and sufferings. He died at Gilet, Valencia, Spain, on the 27th January, 1896. He was canonised on 16th July, 1993, in Madrid, by Pope John Paul II.
Entrance Antiphon - Lk 4:18
The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor.
Lord God, you wonderfully joined in your Priest, Saint Henry de Osso, a life of continual prayer and untiring apostolic activity. By the help of his prayers may we persevere in the love of Christ and serve your Church by word and deed. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever.
A reading from the book of Wisdom. - Wis 7:7-8;10-14;8:2-3
She it was I loved and searched for from my youth.
I prayed, and understanding was given me;
I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones;
compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
I reckoned no priceless stone to be her peer,
I loved her more than health or beauty,
preferred her to the light,
since her radiance never sleeps.
In her company all good things came to me,
at her hands riches not to be numbered.
All these I delighted in, since Wisdom brings them,
but as yet I did not know she was their mother.
What I learned without self-interest, I pass on without reserve;
I do not intend to hide her riches.
For she is an inexhaustible treasure to men,
and those who acquire it win God's friendship,
commended as they are to him by the benefits of her teaching.
She it was I loved and searched for from my youth;
I resolved to have her as my bride,
I fell in love with her beauty.
Her closeness to God lends lustre to her noble birth,
since the Lord of all has loved her.
Responsorial Psalm - Ps 15:1-2.5.7-8.11
R/. You are all my inheritance, O Lord.
Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
I say to the Lord: 'You are my God'.
O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup;
it is you yourself who are my prize. R/.
I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,
who even at night directs my heart.
I keep the Lord ever in my sight:
since he is at my side I shall stand firm. R/.
You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence,
at your right hand happiness for ever. R/.
Gospel Acclamation - Mt 5:16
Your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew - Mt 5:13-16
You are the light of the world.
Jesus said to his disciples: 'You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on a lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.'
Prayer over the Gifts
Lord, by this celebration, may your Spirit fill us with the same light that shone in your servant Saint Henry and urged him to promote your glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Communion Antiphon - Jn 15: 4-5
Make your home in me, as I make mine in you, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me with me in him, bears fruit in plenty.
Prayer after Communion
Lord, may the sacred mysteries we receive help us to follow the example of Saint Henry who worshipped you with unfailing devotion and spent himself in loving service for your people. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
