Iona Carmelite Retreat Centre is better known locally as Termonbacca, the name of the townland in which it is situated. 
The word Termonbacca comes from the Gaelic words ‘tearmann’ meaning sanctuary and ‘bacach’ meaning a lame, crippled or poor person.
